End Date: 11/7/2012End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description
Department of Art History Lecture: Dr. Douglass Merrell, Independent Scholar Travels in Ecotopia: Umberto Eco and The Da Vinci Code. Umberto Eco is Italy's most famous contemporary intellectual. He is the author of six novels including The Name of the Rose (1980) that, long before Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code (2003), became an international bestseller as well as a blockbuster film (starring Sean Connery in 1986) by exploring mysterious plots embedded in ancient history. But unlike Dan Brown, Umberto Eco has also written more than 38 books on the middle ages, semiotics, and interpretation theory as well as numerous articles in Italian magazines and newspapers on the products of popular culture such as pop songs, cell phones, and wax museums. He serves, in this way, as a model of a public intellectual who bridges academia and a popular audience in redefining the role of the liberal arts and the humanities in contemporary society.
