DC Culture Night: CHARM by Phillip Dawkins
Start Date: 1/26/2017Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 1/26/2017End Time: 10:00 PM
Event Description

Join fellow Willamette alumni for an evening of culture on H Street at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. CHARM, a play by Phillip Dawkins, presents the colorful inner workings of a youth etiquette class taught by Mama Darleena Andrews, an African-American transgender woman, in an LGBTQ organization called the Center. Though her students initially struggle to see how etiquette relates to their daily battles with identity, poverty and prejudice, Mama’s powerful love and unapologetic attitude eventually win them over. Read the full play summary.

The play is inspired by the true story and work of Miss Gloria Allen at the Center on Halsted in Chicago, Illinois. The Tribune printed a story about her work in 2012.

If you will be joining, please purchase a ticket for the 8 p.m. performance on Thursday, Jan. 26. Tickets can be purchased for $20 or $40 depending on seating choice. Tickets can be purchased here.

Our alumni group will also be meeting for pre-theater drink and food at the nearby Smith Commons (1245 H St, NE) from 6-7:30 p.m.

We hope you can join us for the "inaugural" WU DC Culture Night!
