Achieving Climate Equity Through Institutional Change: improving climate action outcomes for all
Start Date: 10/12/2016Start Time: 6:30 PM
End Date: 10/12/2016End Time: 8:00 PM

Event Description
Climate change will affect everyone, but not all communities are situated equally in how they will experience these changes. Low-income communities and communities of color are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and further, have less opportunity to participate in, and reap the benefit of climate actions. These inequities primarily result from ongoing institutional racial bias and historical discriminatory practices that have resulted in the inequitable distribution of resources and access to opportunities. This being true, what then is the role of institutions in creating different outcomes?
Desiree Williams-Rajee, Equity Specialist for the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, will speak about the City of Portland’s experience in addressing these issues in their most recent update to the Portland Multnomah County Climate Action Plan.
Ms. Williams-Rajee’s was recently honored by the White House as a Climate Equity Champion of Change for her work on the 2015 update to City of Portland Multnomah County Climate Action Plan. She is an active member of her community and currently serves on the board of Verde, a Portland organization that builds environmental wealth through social enterprise, outreach and advocacy. She was also a founding board member for the Center for Diversity and the Environment and established the Environmental Justice workgroup for the Portland African American Leadership Forum. Most importantly in her role as environmentalist and social justice advocate, she is a mother of two working to leave the world on a better path than she found it.
