2013 Backpack Project (Multi-Day Event)
All Day

The Backpack Project is an annual school supply and toiletry drive for homeless youth in Salem. The donations will go to HOME Youth & Resource Center in downtown Salem. HOME is a shelter for homeless youth ages 13-17, and they provide many services to the youth that come to their house. The reason this project is called "The Backpack Project" is because the primary item that HOME needs is backpacks. The youth that HOME serves hold ALL of their possessions in their backpack so they get worn down very fast. HOME’s shelter holds a Christmas party for the youth where they handout the backpacks they raise, which are filled with basic hygiene essentials as well as warm winter clothing like a scarf or hat. During the holidays toiletries and school supplies are very important for the youth served by HOME and it would be a great gift to give youth the supplies to continue working towards their education. We are asking students and student organizations on campus to donate school supplies, toiletries and backpacks for this drive. We will be collecting them between now until December 6th on the second floor of the UC. Please consider donating and getting your friends and student organizations involved.

David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who traveled to the Near East in the late 1830s and produced a series of bound, hand-colored lithographs of Egypt and the Holy Land in the 1840s from sketches made during his travels. These folios provided Europeans, and eventually Americans, with their first views of the exotic Orient, changing forever their vision of Egypt and the Middle East. This small exhibition features several of Roberts’ prints.
