All Day

*WU Campus - Hatfield Library

Introduction to the Exhibition on the Bamboo Musical Instruments from Yunnan, China: Bamboo was one of the eight types of materials for musical instruments in China over three thousand years ago. Bamboo musical instruments have been essential not only to the elite music, but also to the folk music in China. In the ethnically diverse Southwestern region in Yunnan, China, bamboo musical instruments are also historically and culturally associated with different ethnic groups. This exhibition displays the diverse creativity in making bamboo musical instruments in Yunnan, and demonstrates the continuity of the local culture in this global age.
Diwali (Multi-Day Event)
All Day

Diwali (pronounced, Dee-va-lee) is a very popular five-day Hindu festival known as the Festival of Lights. Dedicated to the Goddesses Kali in Bengal and Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth) in the rest of India, it is associated with a story about the destruction of evil by Lord Vishnu in one of his many manifestations. Diwali symbolizes the human urge to move toward the light. It is observed with gift exchanges, fireworks, and festive meals.
Bandi Chhor Divas
All Day

Bandi Chhor Divas means "the day of the prisoners' release" and recalls the negotiation by Guru Hargobind Ji (the sixth Guru) of the release of himself and 52 princes. Because he was released on the day of Diwali, Sikhs in Amritsar illuminate the city and lamps are lit by Sikhs around the world.

David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who traveled to the Near East in the late 1830s and produced a series of bound, hand-colored lithographs of Egypt and the Holy Land in the 1840s from sketches made during his travels. These folios provided Europeans, and eventually Americans, with their first views of the exotic Orient, changing forever their vision of Egypt and the Middle East. This small exhibition features several of Roberts’ prints.
