This exhibition showcases 64 ancient works, created between 6000 B.C. – 500 B.C. in the Fertile Crescent, an area stretching from Turkey to Iran, often called “the cradle of civilization.” This exhibition will be the sole venue for this important collection of cultural treasures drawn from over 20 distinguished collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition explores the art of the Babylonians, Israelites, Persians and other ancient Near Eastern people and cultures.

David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who traveled to the Near East in the late 1830s and produced a series of bound, hand-colored lithographs of Egypt and the Holy Land in the 1840s from sketches made during his travels. These folios provided Europeans, and eventually Americans, with their first views of the exotic Orient, changing forever their vision of Egypt and the Middle East. This small exhibition features several of Roberts’ prints.

Christmas Lessons & Carols Worship Service

The campus and Salem communities are invited to the university's annual Christmas Service of Lessons and Carols.

Based on the service broadcast annually by the BBC from King's College Chapel, Cambridge University, the worship service includes traditional scripture passages from the Old and New Testaments read by representatives of various parts of the campus community - the Lessons - and congregational singing - the Carols.

An offering will be taken to benefit the work of Marion-Polk Food Share.

Yule
All Day

Yule is the Wiccan celebration of rebirth and renewal. At Yule, the Goddess gives birth to her son, the God, who is symbolized by the sun. His birth brings hope and the promise of the coming summer. Yule is a remnant of older rituals which hurried the end of winter and the coming of spring.

This exhibition showcases 64 ancient works, created between 6000 B.C. – 500 B.C. in the Fertile Crescent, an area stretching from Turkey to Iran, often called “the cradle of civilization.” This exhibition will be the sole venue for this important collection of cultural treasures drawn from over 20 distinguished collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition explores the art of the Babylonians, Israelites, Persians and other ancient Near Eastern people and cultures.

David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who traveled to the Near East in the late 1830s and produced a series of bound, hand-colored lithographs of Egypt and the Holy Land in the 1840s from sketches made during his travels. These folios provided Europeans, and eventually Americans, with their first views of the exotic Orient, changing forever their vision of Egypt and the Middle East. This small exhibition features several of Roberts’ prints.

Advent is the Christian time of preparation for observing the birth of Jesus Christ. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30 and is the beginning of the Christian worship year. Advent is observed with the lighting of advent candles, the display of wreaths, and special ceremonies. In many Christian traditions each of the four Sundays of the season represents a particular theme.
