Event Description
E. Elena Songster is Associate Professor of History at St. Mary's College of California. Her forthcoming book, Panda Nation: The Construction and Conservation of China's Modern Icon (Oxford, 2018), explores the interplay between the promotion of the panda as a symbol of the nation and the establishment of nature preserves and the development of conservation practices in the People's Republic of China. In this lecture, Professor Songster will detail the formative processes that saw the establishment of the panda preserves in the 1950s.
