Holy Beauty:
Northern Renaissance Prints Discovered in an Early English Bible

Organized by Professor Ricardo De Mambro Santos, the exhibition features as its centerpiece the Hexham Abbey Bible, a rare 17th-century English Bible printed in Cambridge, England in 1629. The Bible includes 110 16th-century Dutch and Flemish prints that were interpolated into the volume after it was printed.

Prints within the Bible include works attributed to Philip Galle (Dutch, 1537-1612), after Maarten van Heemskerck (Dutch, 1498-1574); Hieronymus Cock (Flemish, 1518-1579), Jan Sadeler (Flemish, 1550-1600), and Maerten de Vos (Flemish, 1532-1603), among others.

Visitors will have an opportunity to scroll through the Bible via touch screens in the Study Gallery. In addition, the exhibition will include 35 16th-century Dutch and Flemish prints—some like those found in the Bible and others of the period—on view in the Print Study Center and the Maribeth Collins Lobby.

Event Image Performance | Choreography for Reading Aloud
12:30 PM - 1:00 PM

*WU Campus - Hallie Ford Museum of Art

As part of the "MK Guth: Paying Attention" exhibition at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, reading performances of "Choreography for Reading Aloud" have been scheduled from 12:30–12:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, January 23, February 20, and March 20, and on Saturdays, February 20 and March 10, in the Atrium Gallery at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

"Choreography for Reading Aloud" consists of a mixed-media installation of books, manuscripts, letters, and diaries selected by the artist from Willamette University’s Archives and Special Collections, housed at the Mark O. Hatfield Library. The printed materials and objects focus on Oregon art and history and include the diaries of Salem photographer Myra Albert Wiggins; the papers of prominent Oregon politician Norma Paulus; the zines of Salem artists nic and sloy; and the AIDS journals of Paul Wynne, among others. Event Image Lecture | Touching Heaven: Moral Interpretations of Religious Themes in Northern Renaissance Art
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

*WU Campus - Law School

Professor Ricardo De Mambro Santos will provide an introduction to the exhibition Holy Beauty: Northern Renaissance Prints Discovered in an Early English Bible, examining, in particular, the series of engravings displayed at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

Under the creative authority of models such as Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian, sixteenth-century Northern artists developed new strategies in the representation of religious themes, often providing unprecedented interpretations of well-known biblical narratives. By the end of the century, in the complex interplay of Protestant Reformation and Catholic Reform, images produced in the Low Countries – especially prints – had to perform the difficult task of responding simultaneously to the expectations of different audiences.

Professor Ricardo De Mambro Santos
Since 2008, Professor De Mambro Santos teaches classes on Renaissance and Early Modern art as well as courses on theories and methodologies of Art History at Willamette University. He received his PhD on Northern Renaissance art and theory from the University of Bologna in 2001. He is the author of numerous articles and monographic studies on Italian and Netherlandish Renaissance and Mannerism, including essays on Karel van Mander, Giorgio Vasari, Leonardo da Vinci and Leon Battista Alberti.

This lecture is offered conjunction with the Holy Beauty: Northern Renaissance Prints Discovered in an Early English Bible exhibition taking place at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art between February 10 and April 29, 2018.
