Toneless: Dr. Kris Cohen, Reed College
Start Date: 3/21/2017Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 3/21/2017End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description
This chapter, from a book about forms of collectivity in networked life, looks to Felix Gonzalez-Torres's candy spills to help understand how marks like emoticons and 'LOL' are responses to being caught between the commodity logic of data populations and the toxic democracy of internet publics.

Kris Cohen is Assistant Professor of Art and Humanities at Reed College. He studies the relationship between art, economy, and media technologies, focusing especially on the aesthetics of collective life. His current project, entitled Never Alone, Except for Now (Duke University Press, forthcoming), addresses these concerns in the context of electronic networks.
