The Hallie Ford Museum of Art is pleased to feature the ceramic work and drawings of nationally recognized Port Townsend, Washington artist Anne Hirondelle (née Harvey). “Anne Hirondelle: Small Revolutions” opens February 11 in the Study Gallery and Print Study Center and continues through April 30, 2017.

John Olbrantz, the Maribeth Collins Director says, “Throughout her long and prolific career, Hirondelle has pushed the boundaries of the ceramic medium, making functional vessels and abstract sculptures that are warmly alive and visually engaging. This exhibition explores a period of time during the past six to eight years where her work evolved into an intriguing exploration of abstract vessels where function gives way to sculptural possibilities.”

Mesa of Sorrows: Archaeology, History, and the Ghosts of Awat’ovi Pueblo
7:30 PM

*WU Campus - Law School

Dr. James F Brooks
Professor of History & Anthropology, UCSB

The Hopi community of Awat’ovi existed peacefully on Arizona’s Antelope Mesa for generations until one bleak morning in the fall of 1700—raiders from nearby Hopi villages descended on Awat’ovi, slaughtering their neighboring men, women, and children. While little of the pueblo itself remains, five centuries of history lie beneath the low rises of sandstone masonry. Why did kinsmen target it for destruction? Drawing on oral traditions, archival accounts, and extensive archaeological research, James F. Brooks unravels the story, uncovering layer after layer of significance. Mesa of Sorrows is a probing exploration of how societies confront painful histories, and why communal violence still plagues us today.

Few flutists in history have made such indelible marks in so many musical circles. From jazz to pop to classical (Orchestra, chamber & solo) to television to film to the concert hall to his teaching studio, Jim is grateful for the variety his professional life has provided.
He is professor of Flute, Chamber Music and Music Technology at The Colburn Conservatory of Music, and Professor of Practice/Coordinator of Flute Studies at The USC Thornton School of Music where has was awarded the Mellon Mentoring Award and The Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. His summer masterclass, Beyond The Masterclass is now in its ninth year. He has been a faculty member of the Music Academy of the West since 2013. Jim has taught hundreds of flutists, many of them going on to successful orchestral and teaching careers, holding Principal Flute chairs in major symphonies around the world.

Bryan Pezzone is the consummate crossover pianist of his generation. He has excelled in classical, contemporary, jazz, and experimental genres and is known for both his versatility and virtuosity as a performing artist, improviser and composer. He has performed with many major symphony orchestra associations, has toured widely with the jazz group Free Flight, and is known in the Los Angeles area as one of the primary free-lance pianists for film and television soundtrack recording, contemporary music premieres, and chamber music accompanying.
In addition, Bryan has been the principal pianist with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra from its inception in 1991 through 1999, has received on-screen credit for his performance on the soundtrack of "The Game" (with Michael Douglas), The Bucket List, The Kite Runner, Lars and the Real Girl, Flipped, City By the Sea and has been the pianist on virtually all of the cartoons released by Warner Brothers and Disney (Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Goof Troop, Bonkers) from 1990-2002.
