Event Description

SALEM, Ore.— On Saturday, April 22, at 7:30pm, the Center for Asian Studies in affiliation with Willamette University Music Department will present an evening of dance and music improvisations by the duo of Makoto Matsushima and Mike Nord in Smith Auditorium on the Willamette University campus.

Dancer Makoto Matsushima from Tokyo, Japan performs movement and with his voice.  Mike Nord, a music professor at Willamette University, performs on guitar and electronics.  Now entering their eleventh year as collaborators, the pair have worked together as a duo and with the ensemble Noru Ka Soru Ka in the US, Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Switzerland.  Their eclectic mix of influences range from martial arts and modern theater to classical traditions, free jazz, and electronica.  Their improvised narrative work challenges traditional notions of category and style, smoothly moving between lyrical, comedic, meditative, and abstract moods.   The duo’s performances are neither Eastern or Western, but an evocative fusion of both that is accessible to audiences of all ages and cultures.

Makoto Matsushima has toured across the globe with the acclaimed Pappa Tarahumara dance theater and continues to tour throughout Asia performing in director Hiroshi Koike’s Bridge Project cycle. Matsushima has appeared as an independent choreographer and performer participating in residencies and festivals in New York, Berlin, Macao, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Seoul, and Amsterdam to list just a few. A noted teacher, clinician, and designer Makoto has served on the faculties of the Korea National University of the Arts in Seoul Korea, at Sugino Fashion University in Tokyo, Japan and At the Performing Arts Institute/Studio Arts Institute in Tokyo, Japan

Mike Nord records for Leo Records in England. His most recent recording tree, wind & flowers (Leo Records CDLR 747) features longtime collaborator percussionist Georg Hofmann flutist Andreas Stahel.  He also performs with the Willamette Underground trio featuring keyboardist/composer James Miley and drummer Ryan Biesack. Mike has collaborated on installation works with artist Ann Kresge including Vortices (2015) Landscapes (2014 ) and  Healing Forest (2009)  He has performed in Asia, Europe, Mexico, and the US.  Mike is a Professor of Music at Willamette University where he teaches courses in improvisation, digital production, and studio production.
