Event Description
Distilled: Weathering Climate Change Under Trump
On. Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at The Half Penny, Willamette University’s “Distilled” series will feature a talk from law professor Susan Smith, who will present “Distilled: Weathering Climate Change Under Trump.”

Smith will discuss the regulatory and political consequences of Trump’s rejection of climate science.

“Despite Trump’s best efforts, local governments and utilities will continue shifting away from carbon-based fuels,” says Smith. “States are legislating standards at the same time that the market has lowered the cost of new wind and solar power plants.”

While environmental deregulation causes harm, Smith argues that the administration’s rejection of climate science could cause even more damage internationally. “The real harm of the administration's energy and climate policies is the severe decline in our national reputation and credibility, which make it more difficult to achieve US foreign policy objectives,” says Smith.

In addition to teaching, Smith is the Director of the Certificate Program in Sustainability at Willamette University College of Law. She joined Willamette’s faculty after more than two decades litigating environmental and natural resources issues — first as a private attorney and, ultimately, as Assistant Chief of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environmental Defense Section.

Smith earned her law degree and master’s degree in public policy from Harvard. Her academic research and writing focus on water.

Just south of Madrona at 3743 Commercial St. S., The Half Penny is open to all ages until 9 p.m.

Held on the first Wednesday of the month at The Half Penny, Distilled features free public talks by Willamette scholars. No background knowledge is needed, and a Q&A follows each talk.
