The Limits of Earthquake Early Warning
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

*WU Campus - Ford Hall

Dr. Sarah Minson, Research Geophysicist with the USGS Earthquake Science Center in Menlo Park, CA. The objective of earthquake early warning (EEW) is to provide population centers with a useful warning of impending strong ground shaking. But this goal is confounded by the fact that ruptures take time to evolve into large damaging earthquakes (consuming precious warning time) and that earthquake shaking is highly variable (making it difficult to identify who should and shouldn't be warned). However, all is not lost: EEW can significantly mitigate earthquake losses for false-alarm-tolerant users who choose to receive alerts for small ground motions even though this results in many false alarms when little earthquakes don't go on to grow into big damaging earthquakes.
