Strength and Dignity: Images of the Worker

Organized by curator of collections and exhibitions Jonathan Bucci, the exhibition of European and American prints and photographs from the Hallie Ford Museum of Art's permanent collection depicts scenes of workers and the working class from the late 19th century through the fist half of the 20th century. Artists include Jean Charlot, John Stuart Curry, Carl Hall, Lewis Hines, and Marion Post Wolcott, among others.

The Hallie Ford Museum of Art is pleased to present Witness: Themes of Social Justice in Contemporary Printmaking and Photography from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation opening September 15 and continuing through December 20 in the Melvin Henderson-Rubio Gallery and the Maribeth Collins Lobby.

Drawn from one of the legendary contemporary print collections in the United States, Witness explores issues of race, identity, and social justice in contemporary printmaking and photography. The exhibition has been organized by Portland, Oregon art historian and scholar Elizabeth Bilyeu and explores four thematic sections: Stories and Histories, Pressures of Pop Culture, Challenging Expectations of Place, and Unconventional Portraits. The exhibition features 82 prints by 42 nationally and internationally recognized artists, including Enrique Chagoya, Lalla Essaydi, Mildred Howard, Hung Liu, Nicola Lopez, Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooka), Roger Shimomura, Kara Walker, and Marie Watt (Seneca), among others.

Event Image Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series: Bryan Pezzone Masterclass

As part of the Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series, pianist Bryan Pezzone will give a master class for Willamette University students from the jazz and contemporary ensembles, on Tuesday, September 18th, 10:30am on the stage of Hudson Hall.  Admission is free and all are welcome to attend and observe.

Bryan Pezzone is a top freelance pianist in the Los Angeles area. Known for his work on television and film soundtracks, including nearly all of the Warner Brothers cartoons of the 1990s and early 2000s, Pezzone’s exceptional adaptability allows him to crossover among classical, contemporary, jazz and experimental genres. Former Principal Pianist in the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pezzone also founded and led the keyboard department at the California Institute of the Arts from 1987-2000.

Join museum docents for a guided tour of the exhibition Witness: Themes of Social Justice in Contemporary Printmaking and Photography, Selections from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. Tours commence at 12:30 p.m. in the Maribeth Collins Lobby at the museum.

Drawn from the vast collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, this exhibition explores issues of race, identity, and social justice in contemporary printmaking and photography from one of the legendary print collections in the United States.
