A Cure Just Isn’t Good Enough – Moving Beyond Efficacy as the Endpoint in Health Research.
Start Date: 10/28/2016Start Time: 3:00 PM
End Date: 10/28/2016End Time: 4:00 PM

Event Description
Peter Harmer, Professor of Exercise Science will speak about his recent research.

Historically, the focus in healthcare and medical research has been on establishing efficacy in the belief that if a cure is found through carefully designed and controlled scientific studies it will automatically be beneficial for patients. However, what works in a research setting does not necessarily translate into real-world effectiveness. The need to fill this "research-to-practice gap" is highlighted by the growing emphasis of funding agencies to support translation and dissemination studies. This presentation will utilize Tai Ji Quan – Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program that has received multiple federal grants, to illustrate both the limitations of the predominant model of healthcare research that focuses on efficacy studies (e.g., randomized clinical trials (RCT)) and the need for, and opportunities inherent in, establishing coherent and comprehensive research programs that include downstream research (e.g., translation and dissemination; cost effectiveness).
