Ann Wetherell: Guardians of the Law, or the Empire? The Nine Luohans by the Qing painter Zhou Xun
Start Date: 3/7/2017Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 3/7/2017End Time: 8:30 PM

Event Description
Ann Wetherell, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor of Asian Art History at Willamette University explores an unpublished hand scroll of Buddhist luohans (“stream crossers”) in the collection of Pacific University. Signed by the professional artist Zhou Xun, who worked in Nanjing in the early Qing, this energetic painting draws upon the gently humorous imagery of luohans that gained widespread popularity in the sixteenth century. In light of the biography of the artist, however, aspects of this painting suggest a darker message of protest against the Manchu state.
