Event Description

Julianne Baird, soprano will give a master classes for Willamette University voice students on Tuesday, October 17th, 2:00pm on the stage of Hudson Hall.  Admission is free and all are welcome to attend and observe.

Through her “Songbook,” Jane Austen springs to life: her likes and dislikes, her boisterous sense of humor, her passions and her true nature. The Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series is proud to open its 2017-18 season with Julianne Baird, a soprano the New York Times has hailed as a “national artistic treasure,” returning for the third time in a collaboration with fortepianist Marcia Hadjimarkos. Together, they will present a completely unique program at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.

By 1770, the fortepiano had to a large degree replaced the harpsichord, and Austen, as part of the education expected of that generation of young women, had acquired more than a passing knowledge of music and contemporary composition. Her insights, tastes and interests were reflected in what we might today refer to as a “mixtape,” an anthology of one’s favorite compositions for a friend. This is Austen’s “Songbook.” Baird and Hadjimarkos have created a superb and imaginative program of musical works, along with readings from Austen’s novels, in order to bring her favorite music, and thus her spirit, back to life.

Hadjimarkos is performing on an instrument, the fortepiano, whose new dynamic range and subtlety of response can be seen as a metaphor joining the worlds of music and literature. Her playing is described in Diapason: “Beyond the wondrous sensitivity of her touch, two elements stand out: Her very flexible approach to rhythm and her witty, sometimes daringly profuse and yet always-idiomatic ornamentation. In short, this is the most satisfying playing of Mozart I have heard in a long time.”

Baird was described by the Washington Post as having “exquisite instrument which she uses with the intelligence of a scholar … the best voice of any living musicologist.” She is also an accomplished teacher who regularly gives master classes at Yale, Juilliard and Oberlin.
