Event Description

Holy Beauty or Unholy Marriage? Discovery, Provenance, and Social-Theological Musings on the Hexam Abbey Bible

As part of a series of special events accompanying the exhibition Holy Beauty: Northern Renaissance Prints Discovered in an Early English Bible, guest speaker Dr. Bruce T. Martin will will address the recent discovery of the Hexam Abbey Bible (the earliest known English Bible with engravings).

The Reformation in England, punctuated by alternate Royal persuasions even as it retained broad Anglican support, prohibited its Bibles from adding images until 1660. This was as much a “graven images” problem as it was to prohibit distinctly Roman Catholic notions from seeping into the popular consciousness. Martin will propose reasons for its creation and current condition, and begin a dialogue with it in view of modern interpretative sensibilities, both social and theological, exploring, from a variety of angles, the tension between “beauty” and “text.”

Dr. Bruce T. Martin

Dr. Martin received his Th.D. from The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, specializing in theological origins, interreligious dialogue and the English Bible. Dr. Martin has given papers at several academic conferences. He is the president of Historic Bibles & Engravings and is the discoverer of the Hexam Abbey Bible.

This lecture is offered conjunction with the Holy Beauty: Northern Renaissance Prints Discovered in an Early English Bible exhibition taking place at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art between February 10 and April 29, 2018.
