Event Description

The members of the Latinx Law Student Association at Willamette University College of Law are honored to welcome Representative Rocky Barilla to the Dean Daniel P. Santos Diversity Speaker Series. This very special guest will present in Room 201 of the Willamette University College of Law Campus on Thursday, October 11th, 2018 at5:30 p.m.  The event is free to attend, and will be followed by a reception featuring hors d'oeuvres and refreshments in Rick’s Cafe.

In 1986, Rocky Barilla became the first Latino elected to the Oregon Legislature, where he introduced, and played an integral role in passing, the "Sanctuary State" legislation.  The bill passed the Oregon Senate and House easily: 29 to 1 and 58 to 1, respectively, and was signed into law on July 7, 1987. The "Sanctuary" law enables local law enforcement officers to focus on keeping communities safe, rather than enforcing federal immigration policy.  Ballot Measure 105, which will be on Oregonvoters’ ballots this November, threatens to repeal this law. Rocky will present the historical perspective on how this became Oregon law, and what Oregonians can do now.

The Daniel P. Santos Diversity Speaker Series is the signature event of the Latinx Law Student Association at Willamette University College of Law. Each talk  brings a diverse leader from the community to meet Willamette students and provide a space for dialogue between students from diverse or marginalized communities, and the larger Willamette Community. The series engages diverse leaders in conversation with students regarding their experiences in the legal field and beyond. Last Spring, the speaker series welcomed all five women justices of the Oregon Supreme Court to campus as guest panelists to discuss the current makeup of the Oregon Supreme Court.
