From Baraka to Rihanna: Legacies of the Black Arts Movement
Start Date: 2/23/2016Start Time: 4:10 PM
End Date: 2/23/2016End Time: 5:15 PM

Event Description
In this multimedia presentation and lecture, Professor Michael Chasar traces the significance of "SOS" as a keyword in African American poetry since the 1960s, from Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez to slam poet Patricia Smith, rap/hip hop, Rihana, and Claudia Rankine. His examinations of Word War I-era newspapers and other publications reveal the African American history of SOS as more than just a radio distress call.
