An Evening with Benjamin Britten
SALEM, Ore.— On Thursday night April 21st, the Willamette University Department of Music Faculty Recital Series presents “An Evening with Benjamin Britten”. The program begins at 7:30pm in Hudson Concert Hall, Rogers Music Center.
This vocal recital will focus on the exquisite works Britten wrote specifically for tenor. Les Green, tenor and Jean-David Coen, piano will feature the difficult and rarely performed Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo. The intricate and evocative settings of the Italian sonnets are regarded as one of Britten's masterworks. They will be joined by Michael Hettwer, French horn, for the challenging and hauntingly beautiful Canticle III "Still falls the rain" for Tenor, French Horn and Piano. This profound piece is based on a poem of Edith Sitwell which compares the World War II bombing of Great Britain with Christ's suffering and humanity's cruelty, greed and indifference. University of Portland voice faculty and Portland area native Laura Beckel Thoreson, mezzo-soprano, will add her lush vocal artistry to Canticle II "Abraham and Isaac" for Tenor, Mezzo-soprano and Piano. In this work, Britten explores the profound emotional landscape that opens between Abraham and his beloved son Isaac once he is commanded by God to sacrifice his son.
Les Green, instructor of voice, Jean-David Coen, Artist-in-Residence and instructor of piano, and Michael Hettwer, instructor of Horn, are on the music faculty at Willamette University. Laura Beckel Thoreson, mezzo-soprano, is on the faculty at the University of Portland and is a Portland area native.
