Event Description
The Department of Art continues ART NOW: Visiting Artists Lecture Series, a series of lectures by contemporary studio artists. All faculty, students and staff are invited to a lecture presented by Paula Portinga Booth, the 3rd artist to visit us this spring semester. She will present at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2016, in the Art Bldg. Rm. 212.
Booth’s work stitches together living and deceased relatives across generations and through time into a quilted and painted genealogy that explores the themes of memory, nostalgia and identity. Paula is a mixed media artist, curator, teacher and mother living and working in the Willamette Valley. When she is not in the studio or trying to keep up with her two kids, she can be found at Western Oregon University where she runs the Cannon Gallery of Art and teaches in the Art Department. Paula holds a degree in Art History from Willamette University (1993), and completed her MFA in Studio Art at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2005.
She describes her work as follows,"Presently, I am in the process of investigating my own self-identity in relation to my memories of family and childhood. As a daughter, granddaughter, sister and mother, I explore ideas of nostalgia, longing and memory (personal and generational) as well as perception: perception of real events and how that perception changes and fluctuates with the infusion of new ideas and experiences. The act of remembering becomes a defining act in both life and art.” Booth echoes Einstein’s assertion that, “memory is deceptive because it is colored by today’s events.”
ART NOW: Visiting Artists Lecture Series aims to introduce Willamette students and the greater Salem community to provocative contemporary artists working today. Through public lectures and studio workshops, ART NOW visiting artists will provide insight on their artwork and studio practice, as well as share their research and inspiration.
